The Irish National Stud and Gardens is a unique attraction that captures Ireland's love of horses, heritage and nature.
On paper, perhaps, a working stud farm and some pretty gardens may not sound like the most exciting or enthralling way to spend an afternoon.
But, nestled in the lush rural surroundings of Co Kildare, the Irish National Stud and Gardens is a fantastic family day out.
From strolling around the extensive paddocks and stables, getting up close to living equine legends, to learning more about the history of Irish horse racing through an interactive adventure, the National Stud is a living, breathing exhibition of Ireland’s equestrian heritage.

It's about more than horses
Still, even if you’re not an equestrian at heart, you can’t help but be captivated and charmed by the National Stud.
The grounds are some of the prettiest surroundings you could find yourself in.

From the peaceful tranquillity of St Fiachras Garden to the enchanting Japanese Gardens, there are stunning examples of the beauty and power of nature down every path.
For younger visitors, there is also the Kids Zone play area as well as a fairy trail where imaginations (and energy levels) can run wild.
Bites to eat
After a few hours working up an appetite in the glorious outdoors, The Japanese Garden Restaurant offers a choice of wholesome food - quiche, sandwiches and a delicious selection of fresh bakes and cakes to enjoy.
If DIY, al fresco, dining is more your style, there are picnic areas to sit, eat and take in the beauty of the gardens.
Special events
Throughout the year, the Irish National Stud and Gardens also put on a series of special events such as its Easter Eggstravaganza and Halloween Spooktacular, adding another level to the family fun to be had at the stud.
It’s best to keep an eye on the Stud’s website if you’re looking to visit because there might be special activities to include in your plans.
What we thought about it …
When we visited here, we happily spent hours exploring all that the stud and gardens had to offer.
We loved the place. It was fascinating getting such an insight into the workings of a stud farm and everything that is involved in having a successful breeding operation.
Being able to see some of the foals frolicking happily in the fields was a real highlight.
We were in awe of some certified legends of the horse racing that now live at the National Stud - the likes of Beef or Salmon, Hurricane Fly and Faugheen all reside here.

It is difficult to comprehend the size and stature of these horses until you come face to face with them, just seeing race horses on TV really does not do them justice.
We were fortunate to have visited on a sunny day (which is never guaranteed here in Ireland) and it really highlighted the beauty of the gardens.
Clearly, the horses take top billing at the National Stud, but, we recommend you give yourself enough time so you can properly explore and enjoy all these areas and appreciate all they have to offer.
So, whether you're an avid race fan, a nature buff, or a family seeking a unique day out, the Irish National Stud & Gardens will surely be a memorable highlight of your Irish itinerary.
