Minecraft theme park attractions and hotels are coming to the UK and America, under proposals today unveiled by Merlin and Microsoft.
Alton Towers and Legoland owner Merlin Entertainments is to develop new Minecraft theme park experiences in the UK and the United States.
Specific details have yet to be announced, beyond the news of a global partnership with Microsoft-owned Mojang Studios, the original creator of the wildly popular world-builder video game.
Together, Merlin and Mojang plan to launch immersive real-world attractions themed around the game with their vision to create “Adventures Made Real".
At first, the partnership starts with an investment of $110.00 million which Merlin chief executive Scott O'Neil described as “just the beginning".
“Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, and this world-first will see fans experience its thrill and creativity in real life," O'Neil said in a statement.
According to a press release, Merlin and Mojang plan to debut their new Minecraft theme park attractions between 2026 and 2027.
Authentic and immersive experiences
Mojang will collaborate with Merlin Magic Making, Merlin's creative development team to ensure the attractions are authentic and immersive.
It is also proposed that the new Minecraft partnership will include themed accommodations, interactive rides, retail outlets, and food and beverage options – and a video game crossover with exclusive in-game content tied to real-world theme park experiences.
“Merlin's expertise in creating world-class attractions makes them the perfect partner to help us bring Minecraft to life in new and immersive ways in permanent locations around the globe,” Microsoft vice-president for franchise development added.
“We are thrilled to build touchpoints around the globe that will surprise and delight them.”
More details may emerge later today, as representatives of Merlin and Microsoft are due to speak at the IAAPA Expo 2024 in Orlando.
