The UK has lost an ailing stalwart of its theme park industry with the closure of Oakwood Theme Park, in Pembrokeshire, South Wales.
Spanish attractions and tourism business Aspro Parks Group decided to close the theme park, which it bought in 2008, bring to an end nearly 40 years of operation.
Aspro blamed rising costs and declining visitor numbers among the reasons for its decision - or in its own dramatic words, it was due to “unrelenting economic challenges”.
It comes just weeks after well-publicised reports of cost-cutting elsewhere with Alton Towers, Legoland and Thorpe Park owner Merlin Entertainment undertaking a programme of cost-cutting.
Aspro Parks owns a portfolio of 68 European attractions including the Aqualand waterpark in Tenerife.
In the UK, Aspro also operates attractions at Hastings Castle as well as aquariums in Chesire, Bristol, Tynemouth, Newquay, and Fife.
